At LAC we are applying sophisticated research and development to provide objectively scored standardized language tests for all level learners – from beginner to advanced. To create our state of the art online testing platform, we assembled the industry’s top experts in language assessment, large scale testing and psychometrics. We are committed to constant improvement – including design testing, specification testing, alignment to the Common European Framework of Reference, form assembly, item analysis, standards setting, and ongoing quality control.

Our language test scores are aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR was developed by the Council of Europe as a way of standardizing the levels of language exams in different regions. The six CEFR levels (from A1 to C2) are widely accepted as the global standard for grading an individual’s language proficiency:

GroupLevelDescription
Basic userA1Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
Basic userA2Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
Independent userB1Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
Independent userB2Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
Proficient userC1Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects.
Proficient userC2Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

You can feel confident that your scores reflect what you would receive on other tests like TOEFL and IELTS because our tests were built to the same standards of accuracy and reliability as other standardized language tests.

However, our tests are designed to fill a gap that none of the other high-stakes language tests currently fills – to give the user power over his/her own progress and to support language learning for everyone, regardless of their economic status, financial condition, or location. We remove these barriers by making our tests affordable and available online.

Finally, our tests are currently part of the few standardized language tests that accurately measure all skill levels – beginner to proficient – in one test iteration and in alignment with the internationally recognized standard, the CEFR. Most other standardized language tests are able to assess some proficiency levels, but not the entire CEFR scale.
